The plasma ejection occurred due to two almost simultaneous rupture of a filament located in the southeastern region of the star. Within hours the particles are merged into a single mass hurled into space. Due to geoefetiva position of the filament, most of the particles load was directed to our planet and is expected to reach the Earth's magnetosphere between the night of Friday and Saturday.
A solar filament is an elongated and extremely dense region, formed by huge amounts of glowing hydrogen trapped by very strong magnetic fields. Typically, the filaments dissipate within hours or days, but sometimes rupture due to the high instability of the forces involved, ejecting material into space.
Here on Earth
Most of the charged particles are ejected when they are deflected near the Earth's magnetosphere. However, part of it can pierce the blocking and reaches the upper atmosphere, typically on higher latitude.
The outcome of Wednesday's ejection will be the formation of geomagnetic storms with possible formation of auroras at high latitudes.
The KP index, which measures the instability in the ionosphere may reach the KP = 6 level, most likely not exceed the KP = 5 level and may cause fluctuations in the power grid and impacting operations involving satellites.
