A document leaked last week suggests that the US government was spying on the smartphones of various citizens. According to the Intercept site that had access to information, a report details how the National Security Agency, NSA, uses equipment to observe ordinary people and to solve minor crimes.
The devices, called "trackers phones", can be used to geographically locate a system, spy on calls and SMS messages and even copy information from notes, deleted messages and mobile media files.

How it works?
Many spying devices operate imitating the towers of major carriers. When a phone connects to the fake network, it transmits a unique identification code that can reveal the phone's location.
The problem, according to Lynch, is that the police are using the equipment to watch ordinary people. "I am not aware of any case where a police agency has used a crawler to find a terrorist. The police have used cell trackers to solve even the smallest domestic crimes," he says. For the lawyer, such use is unjustified and illegal.
"For these devices to be able to collect so much information of innocent people, a simple warrant for its use is not enough. The police officers should be required to limit the use of the device to a short and defined period of time. The police also need to be clear in the statement on the cause that justifies the warrant and on device capabilities, "says Lynch.
The US government, however, says that the use of rastradores has been "an important tool in law enforcement on a range of investigations, including kidnapping, investigations of fugitives and narcotics."
