DOM Theodosius I, 5 DUKE OF BRAGANÇA
Bishop Theodosius I of Braganza, the twelfth grandfather of the head of the Imperial House of Brazil, was born around the year 1505, in Vila Viçosa, Alentejo. It was the Don Jaime I's firstborn, 4th Duke of Braganza (1479-1532), and his first wife, Dona Leonor de Guzmán (died 1512), daughter of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, the Castilian nobility.
His preceptor was the Master Diogo Sigeo, very learned man, considered one of the first scholars of his time. Bishop Theodosius I, typical of the Renaissance man, was painting and sculpture lover and was always attentive to what was happening in the other courts of Europe.
With the death of his father, on September 20, 1520, it became a teenager, the 5th Duke and Head of the House of Braganza. In 1537, when her sister, Dona Isabel de Braganza (1512-1576), was betrothed by Prince Duarte (1515-1540), son of King Manuel I of Portugal (1469-1521), Bishop Theodosius I donated to coined as part of the dowry of his sister, the Guimarães Duchy.
While he lived, there was no war in Portugal. The Queen Regent, Mrs. Catherine of Austria (1507-1578), came to appoint him General of an army that would go on mission to Africa, in order to fight the Moors, but the military campaign ended up not being performed. Very Religious, Bishop Theodosius I founded several convents.
On June 25, 1542, the 5th Duke of Braganza married his cousin, Dona Isabel of Lancaster (1513-1558), which gave him an only son, John I of Braganza (1543-1583), who succeeded him as 6th Duke of Braganza. In 1559, in remarriages, D. Theodosius I married Beatriz of Lancaster (1542-1623), the high nobility Lusitanian lady, who bore him two sons: Don Jaime de Braganza (1559-1578), who died in the Battle of Alcacer Quibir; and Dona Isabel de Braganza, Duchess of Caminha by marriage.
He died on December 22, 1563, in Vila Viçosa, at fifty-three years of age, who was succeeded as Duke of Braganza and his other titles, for his firstborn.
